Eat your way to a better sex life!

Is your love life far from sizzling? By eating certain foods you could spice it right up again as our sex drive is affected by what we put into our bodies.

Read our top ten foods to lift your libido!

1. Chocolate

The way to a woman’s heart is through chocolate, not only because it tastes so good but because it contains phenylethylamine, a chemical compound believed to produce feelings of happiness and euphoria. Chocolate also contains theobromine, which is very similar to caffeine, so after eating it you will get a quick boost of energy. So head down the shops pronto and buy some choccies for your partner, but not too many mind, you may want to boost your sex drive, but you certainly don’t want to increase your waistline.

2. Celery

When someone says celery, sex may not spring to mind, but it is a known fact that this versatile vegetable is a great food to ramp up sexual stimulation. This is because it contains, androsterone, an odourless hormone released through male perspiration. This may sound pretty gross, but it apparently turns the ladies on, so forget the Lynx effect, it’s all about the celery sticks!

3. Chilies

Feeling hot hot hot? Well you will be after eating chilies, as spicy foods are known to get the heart pumping. Capaicin, which gives chilies their kick, triggers the release of endorphins, which as we know create feelings of happiness and pleasure. But whatever you do, if you are creating a chili dish for your partner wash your hands before wiping your eyes or your date will think you have been watching one too many chick flicks!

4. Asparagus

It is not only this vegetable’s suggestive shape that gets libido levels rising, asparagus is rich in vitamin E, which is considered to stimulate the production of sex hormones in both men and women. So Nicholas Culpepper, a legendary figure in the field of herbal medicine was right when he said asparagus "stirs up lust in man and woman".

5. Avocado

The avocado has long been considered an aphrodisiac and the Aztecs called the avocado tree ahuacatl or “testicle tree.” The fruit was associated with fertility. It is great for both a man and woman’s libido because it contains high levels of folic acid, helping to metabolize proteins, which boosts your energy. Avocados also contain vitamin B6, which increases male hormone production and potassium, which aids in regulating the female thyroid gland, enhancing a woman’s sex drive. In addition, avocados are high in antioxidants, fibre and monounsaturated fat, which is believed to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. So if avocados don’t do it for you in the bedroom, they will certainly do wonders for your health!

6. Oysters

When the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite gave birth to Eros on an oyster shell, the word aphrodisiac was born. It is also believed that the fabled romantic Casanova started his evening meal by eating dozens of oysters. Oysters have a very high zinc content, which raises testosterone levels and sperm production. They also contain dopamine, a hormone known to increase libido. Even their texture is enough to turn some people on. "Oysters are so sensual just in their nature," says Diane Brown, the Los Angeles-based author of The Seduction Cookbook, "They have that slippery, slurpy sensation when you eat them that makes them very seductive."

7. Bananas

It isn’t just the appearance of this fruit which can lift your libido. Despite its phallic shape, bananas contain bromelain, an enzyme which is believed to increase the male sex drive. They are also a good source of potassium B vitamins, such as riboflavin which are necessary for sex-hormone production. A word of advice, when you are eating this food be careful where you leave the skin, a broken back won’t do much for your lifting your libido!

8. Figs

Figs are rich in amino acids, which researchers believe increase libido. They can also improve sexual stamina. It is also believed that the fig works as an aphrodisiac because of its shape and juicy taste, which heighten a person’s senses.

9. Almonds and nuts in general

Almonds are an essential source of fatty acids, which provide the basis for a man’s healthy production of hormones. The smell of almonds is also believed to arouse passion in females. All nuts are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and scientific evidence has shown that they keep the body’s vascular system healthy. The Roman’s allegedly tossed walnuts at newlyweds, because they were considered symbols of fertility. But if I were you, I would stick to confetti, you don’t want to injure the bride and groom before they make it to their honeymoon!

10. Eggs

The smell of eggs may not spark feelings of arousal, but they are high in vitamins B5 and B6, which help to fight stress and balance hormone levels, both vital for a healthy libido. Apparently some people eat raw eggs prior to sex to increase their sex drive and maximize energy levels. Why not give it a go?
