Give the kids a play date

It’s important to make your children feel like they’ve got a treat of their own to look forward to. It sounds like an effort, but basically all it involves is sending the kids off to their friends’ house with rollerblades / the Wii / Top Trumps (delete as appropriate) in tow. Plus, you get free babysitting courtesy of another kid’s parents.

Quality time with the grandparents

What grandparent wouldn’t cancel bingo for some serious you-and-me time with your little treasures? Your kids enjoy the fact they’re going to be indulged non-stop – a lot of jelly and custard can be packed into one day – and your parents will be happy to help. In fact, they’ll be begging to get involved.

Your ex

Look, whether you like it or not your ex is going to be curious about your love life, so you may as well make use of that. And anyway, your ex is as responsible for childcare as you are. Chances are you’re going to be out late, so it’s good for your kids to be able to sleep over. Just try not to rub your ex’s face in it.

Do some nanny-napping

Kidnapping a friend’s nanny is a social no-no, but asking friends to recommend a babysitter is a good idea. Remember, you’re not the only single parent on the dating scene, so a friend in the same position is likely to have the number of a reliable babysitter up their sleeve.

Hire a professional

If all else fails, throw some money at the problem. There are plenty of respectable agencies all over the country who can send you an experienced childcare professional, even at short notice.
